Community & Cultural Engagement

APP works alongside Aboriginal communities, Elders, government and organisations to ensure culture, community voices and cultural authority are meaningfully incorporated into projects and decision making.

Wadjemup Project

Aboriginal Productions and Promotions has played a significant role in the Aboriginal led Wadjemup Project, supporting a statewide process of truth-telling, consultation, healing and commemoration surrounding the history of Aboriginal incarceration on Wadjemup (Rottnest Island).

Working alongside Aboriginal Elders, families, communities and the Wadjemup Project Steering Group, APP has helped create culturally appropriate pathways for Aboriginal people with connections to Wadjemup to have their voices heard and guide the project’s direction. In 2023, APP was appointed lead consultant for the Project’s statewide consultation, building on its earlier involvement in community engagement and cultural authority processes. This work has contributed to conversations around truth-telling, ceremony, the Wadjemup Aboriginal Burial Ground and the future of the Quod, ensuring community and culture remain at the centre of one of Western Australia’s most significant reconciliation projects.

In 2025, Wadjemup Wirin Bidi was recognised at the IPAA WA Achievement Awards, with the Wadjemup Project Steering Group, Aboriginal Productions and Promotions, and Rottnest Island Authority receiving the Moore Australia (WA) Award for Best Practice in Collaboration Between Government and Any Other Organisation.

Aboriginal Cultural Centre

APP has worked closely with Aboriginal communities across Western Australia to help shape the development of the State’s Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Boorloo (Perth).

Led by Dr Richard Walley OAM and Robyn Smith-Walley, APP was engaged to co-deliver the Aboriginal Engagement Strategy and facilitate meaningful, Aboriginal led consultation, placing cultural authority and community decision making into the project from its early stages. During 2022 alone, APP held 61 meetings with more than 380 members of the Noongar community across the South West, alongside broader engagement reaching communities throughout regional WA. The knowledge gathered through this process have helped inform the Centre’s vision, functions and cultural framework.

Dr Walley’s Six Seasons Framework also continues to guide the Centre’s development, connecting each stage of the project to Noongar boodja, culture and ways of understanding place.

Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation

Aboriginal Productions and Promotions was engaged by the Department of Communities to develop the Cultural Narrative for the Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation, a purpose built facility providing safe, culturally appropriate and affordable accommodation for Aboriginal people and families travelling to Boorloo from regional and remote communities across Western Australia.

APP’s Cultural Narrative captured the significance of Country, place and the cultural authority of Traditional Owners, providing a cultural foundation to inform the project’s development. The Narrative directly guided the architects’ approach to the building and landscape design, helping ensure the facility reflected Aboriginal cultural stories, identity and connection to Country.

Through this work, APP helped embed culture into a space designed around welcoming, belonging, identity, culture, safety and wellbeing, which created an environment that responds to the needs of Aboriginal people travelling away from Country while maintaining a strong sense of cultural connection and belonging.

Commissions

Commissioned artworks at Aboriginal Productions & Promotions are developed as lasting cultural expressions, shaped by story, Country and collaboration.

Our commissioned work extends across large scale public works, architecture, landscape, interior spaces, custom woodwork, and private collections. We partner with institutions, architects, developers, collectors and organisations to realise projects of cultural significance.

Indigenous Nationals UWA Sport

Artwork created for the 2025 UniSport Indigenous Nationals. Artwork was used for uniforms, branding and the foyer of the UWA Sport recreation and fitness centre.

Heritage Council of Western Australia: Plaque Redesign

Artwork created for the new heritage plaques installed across State-listed heritage sites throughout Western Australia.

ECU City Campus

Artwork developed as part of a Cultural Narrative for the ECU City Campus. The designed was used as part of a glass wall on the entrance of the Aboriginal Performance Space.

DPIRD Nash Street office fit-out

Artwork was developed as part of a Cultural Narrative in collaboration with Parry & Rosenthal Architects. The design was integrated into the fit-out of the Nash Street office and later translated across staff uniforms.
